Rockstar Games Faces Cyberattack Threat from ShinyHunters
ShinyHunters, a notorious hacking group, has targeted Rockstar Games with a cyberattack, threatening to leak sensitive data unless their demands are met by April 14, 2026. The group compromised servers operated by Anodot, a business monitoring firm, stealing authentication tokens that granted access to customer data from cloud storage systems. The breach, which began on April 4, has affected at least a dozen companies.
Rockstar Games downplayed the incident, stating that only a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed. The studio confirmed it would not pay any ransom. Parent company Take-Two Interactive saw its shares drop over 6% in pre-market trading before recovering. Files later appeared on the dark web, primarily containing user spending patterns rather than game-related details.
ShinyHunters has a history of high-profile attacks, including breaches at Microsoft, Cisco, and Ticketmaster. Security researchers associate the group with the Com, a network of young, English-speaking hackers aged 16 to 25. The Grand Theft Auto franchise, one of the most successful video game series, remains a cornerstone of Rockstar's portfolio.
